Director’s Notes and Information

 

Purpose:  The purpose of this page is to improve the flow of information.  Look to this page when you want to find the latest information about band events—schedules, results and reminders about upcoming events.

 

06/15/08 Spirit Camp for Leadership Kids

Ø      Basic Schedule

o       Be at the school at 6:00 am on Tuesday, June 24, 2008.  The bus will leave at 7:00 pm.

o       We will arrive in Birmingham around 4:00 pm Central Time.

o       We will depart for home on Saturday, around 12:30 pm Central Time and arrive at Foard around 11:00 pm Eastern Time.

Ø      Money:

o       Bring money to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on Tuesday, as well as money for lunch and dinner on Saturday.

o       Other than the meals listed above, there is no need (other than snacks and the traditional trip to Wal-Mart) to bring a bunch of money with you.

o       If you owe a balance to the camp, please bring that with you.

Ø      Things to remember:

o       Please read all information carefully and bring things needed (music stands, instruments, towels, etc.).

o       $50 ROOM KEY DEPOSIT (1) make check payable to Spirit Camps and 2) write “Key Deposit” and student’s name & school on check).  This will be held (NOT DEPOSITED) and returned to you last day of camp when you return your key.

o       ALSO bring the following—Balance of your camp fees, Parental Consent Form, Copy of Health Insurance Card (front & back) and Camp Rules & Regulations form (on back of Parental Consent Form).

05/14/08 Some End of Year Information

Ø      BAND CAMP:

o       Dates: Sunday, August 3 to Friday, August 8, 2008 and Monday/Tuesday, August 11/12, 2008.

o       Times: Sunday, August 3 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  (Leadership team will meet from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.).  Monday, August 4 thru Thursday, August 7 from 8:00-6:00.  Camp show starts at 6:00 pm.  Friday, August 8, from 8:00 until 12:00 Noon.  Monday, August 11 and Tuesday, August 12 from 8:00 until 6:00

o       Fee: The fee for camp is $120.00 ($110.00 for guard).  Fee money goes:  1) to pay for a show t-shirt for everyone, 2) to pay everyone’s uniform fee and 3) to pay the clinicians and other camp/show expenses.  Payment of the fee is due on the first day of band camp. If you will have trouble paying the camp fee on time, please contact Mr. Neely.

Ø      PERCUSSION CAMP:

o       Dates: Monday, July 28 thru Friday, August 1, 2008.

o       Times: 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.

o       Fee: The camp fee is $100.00.  This is an increase of $20.00

o       Clinician: Rick Cline

Ø      GUARD CAMP:

o       Dates: Monday, July 28 to Friday, August 1, 2008.

o       Times: 8:00-5:00.

o       Clinician: Anne Hale.

o       Fee: $120.00.

o       Note: All guard members need to attend both guard and band camp.

Ø      OUT-OF-SCHOOL PRACTICES: Regular after school practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 and will begin on August 26, 2008.

o       Extra Summer (Post Band Camp) Practices:  

§        Thursday, August 14 from 3:30 to 5:30.

§        Tuesday, August 19 from 3:30 to 5:30.

o       Saturday Practices:

§        Saturday, September 6—8:00-3:00.

§        Saturday, September 20—8:00-12:00 noon.

§        Saturday, September 27—8:00-12:00 noon.

Ø       MARCHING BAND SHOW

The theme for the 2008-2009 Foard High School “Tiger” Band show will be “Sun, Moon and Stars.”  The opener will be a medley of “Good Day Sunshine” (1966, Lennon/McCartney) and “Here Comes the Sun” (1969, George Harrison) by Beatles.  The second selection will be “Moondance” (1970) by the Irish 1960s-era blues/rock singer, Van Morrison.  The final selection will be “Vincent” (“Starry, Starry Night,” 1971) by the singer/songwriter Don McLean.  The closer, “Vincent,” is about Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), the Dutch Post-Impressionistic artist who was one of the leaders of Expressionism

 

05/14/08 Jazz Band at NC Jazz Region-West Festival

The jazz band participated in the NC Jazz Region-West Region Jazz Festival on April 25 at Grandview MS in Hickory, NC and received a SUPERIOR rating.  They performed Work Song, Quiet Nights and Quiet Stars and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy.  This is the fifth superior rating in a row the jazz band has made at region jazz festival.

 

04/15/08 WGI World Championships

The Foard Guard participated in the WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH on April 10, 2008.  There were a total of 130 units in the Scholastic A Class.  The Foard Guard ranked 12 out of 17 in their round, 43 out of 64 in their Division and 89th out of 130 overall.  Congrats to the guard for a great season!

 

04/9/08 Guard to CIPA Finals

The Foard Winter Guard competed in the Carolina Indoor Performance Association’s Circuit Finals on Saturday, April 5 at Western Carolina University, earning the bronze medal by placing third in the “High School A National” Class.  Their score was an 84.3.  White Knoll was 4th with 82.9, Volunteer Blue was 2nd with 85.4 and Byrnes Indigo was 1st with 87.3.

 

03/17/08 Guard to Atlanta

The Foard Winter Guard participated in the Winter Guard International Atlanta Regional held at Centennial High School in Roswell, GA on Saturday, March 15.  Groups from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee participated.  In the preliminary completion, the Foard Winter Guard placed 14th out of 30 units in the “Scholastic A” Class.  This earned them a spot in the coveted finals competition, where they placed 14th out of 15 units.  Congratulations to the Foard Winter Guard for a job well done. 

 

03/13/08 Symphonic Band at Festival

The Foard Symphonic Band participated in the NW District Concert Band Festival on March 12 and received a rating of Superior (I, I, II on stage and I in SR).  The band performed Torch of Liberty March (King), Festivo (Nehlybel) and The Light Eternal (Swearingen).  Only four bands out of seventeen participating on March 12, day one of the three day event, earned Superior ratings.  This is the second Superior rating in a row the band has earned at concert festival.  Since 1990, the Foard High School Band has earned 13 superior ratings and 5 excellent ratings at District Concert Festival.

 

03/08/08 All-State Jazz Band

Congratulations to Drew Cortney for making the NC All-State Jazz Band on drum set!

 

03/07/08 Concert Band (1st Period) at Concert Festival

The Concert Band I/Prep Band participated in the Catawba Concert Festival held at Maiden High School on Tuesday, March 4 and received a rating of Excellent.  Congratulations.

 

03/03/08 Guard News

Ø      North Lincoln: The Foard Guard participated in the Carolina Indoor Performance Association’s contest held at North Lincoln HS on Saturday, March 1, 2008 and earned 1st Place in the “High School A” Class.  This is the third first place finish for the Foard Winter Guard.

Ø      Promotion:  Congratulations to the Foard Winter Guard.  The guard, scoring an 80.2 at the North Lincoln contest Saturday, qualified and has been promoted to the “High School A National” Class for CIPA.  The Foard Guard will be competing in this class at the CIPA Finals on April 5, 2008 at Western Carolina University.  This promotion affects only CIPA contests.

 

02/24/08 Jazz Band to Elon Jazz Festival

The Foard HS Jazz Band earned a Superior rating at the Elon University Jazz Festival on Friday, February 22, 2008.  Christyan Barnes and Patrick Finger were recognized as Outstanding Soloists.

                               

02/24/08 Guard to CIPA Greer

The Foard Guard participated in the Carolina Indoor Performance Association’s contest held at Greer HS (SC) on Saturday, February 23, 2008.  They won 1st Place in the “High School A” Class.  The guard next competes at North Lincoln on Saturday, March 1.

 

02/04/08 Guard at CIPA North Lincoln Qualifier

Congratulations to the Foard Winter Guard.!  They participated in the Carolina Indoor Performance Association’s qualifying contest held at North Lincoln HS on Saturday, February 2, 2008.  They earned 1st Place in the “High School A” class.

 

01/17/08 Congrats to Students Chosen for All-District Band

Congrats to the following Foard students for being chosen for the South Central District All-District Band.  The clinic will be at Mooresville High School on January 25/26, 2008.

01/17/08 Congrats to Students Chosen for All-Region Jazz Band

Congrats to the following Foard students for being chosen for the NC Jazz Region-West All-Region Jazz Band.  The clinic will be at Lenoir-Rhyne College on February 15/16, 2008.

10/26/07 Foard at Freedom Contest

The Foard “Tiger” Band participated in the 20th Annual Freedom Classic Tournament of Bands at Freedom High School on Saturday, October 20, 2007 with the following results in Class AAA:  Superior rating, 1st Place Band, 1st Place Horn Line (Music), 2nd Place Percussion, 1st Place Drum Majors and 1st Place Guard. 

 

The Foard Band—tied with Newton-Conover for the 4th highest score of the day, tied with Hendersonville for the 3rd highest music score of the day, had the 2nd highest percussion score of the day, the highest drum major score of the day and the highest guard score of the day (89--the only guard to break 80 pts.).

 

10/16/07 Butler Contest

The Foard 'Tiger' Band participated in the Festival of Bands at Butler HS (Charlotte, NC) Saturday, October 13, 2007 with the following results in Class AAA:  Excellent rating, 2nd Place Band, 2nd Place Marching, 2nd Place GE, 1st Place DM and 1st Place Guard.  Myers Park (Charlotte) was 1st, South Point (Belmont) was 3rd and Sun Valley (Union County) earned an excellent rating.  The band ranked 5th out of 16 bands the entire day regardless of class.

 

10/10/07 Forestview Contest

The Foard "Tiger" Band participated in the 2nd Annual Jaguar Classic at Forestview HS in Gastonia on Saturday, October 6 in Class 3A:  Superior rating, 1st Place Band, 1st Place Music, 1st Place Marching, 1st Place General Effect, 2nd Place Percussion, 2nd Place Drum Major and 1st Place Auxiliary (Guard).  The band ranked 3rd highest of the day out of 10 bands regardless of class.

 

10/03/07 South Caldwell Contest Results

The Foard "Tiger" Band participated in the Spartan Southern Classic marching band contest at South Caldwell HS on Saturday, September 28 with the following results in Class AA:  Excellent rating, 1st Place Band, 2nd Place Music, 1st Place Marching, 1st Place Effect, 1st Place Percussion, 2nd Place DM and 1st Place Guard.  2nd Place band in AA was West Lincoln and 3rd Place band was McMichael.  It was a very small contest this year--the Foard Band was 4th Place out of 6 bands overall.  We also received the Unifour Crown Award for the group from the Unifour (Caldwell, Burke, Catawba and Alexander Counties) with the highest score.

05/06/07 Jazz Band at Region Jazz Festival

The Foard High School Jazz Band received a rating of SUPERIOR at the North Carolina Jazz Region-West Jazz Festival on Friday, May 4th at Grandview Middle School in Hickory, NC.  This is the 4th superior rating in a row the jazz band has received at region jazz festival.  Congrats to the jazz band.

 

04/03/07 Guard at CIPA Championships

The guard attended the Carolina Indoor Performance Association Championship on Saturday, March 31, 2007.  They finished 5th place out of 10 units in the High School A class.  There score was a 78.35 (only .25 away from 4th place).  Other units were North Buncombe, Fort Mill Blue, Boiling Springs, Jay M. Robinson, Byrnes B, Dorman A, Karns (3rd), Grayson County (2nd) and Bandys (1st).

 

03/28/07 Symphonic Band to Concert Festival

The Foard High School Band participated in the South Central District Concert Festival held at North Lincoln HS on Tuesday, March 28, 2007 and received a Superior rating.  The band received Superior ratings from the three judges adjudicating the performance and from the judge adjudicating the sight-reading.  This festival performance was the LAST CONCERT FESTIVAL IN “BIG BLUES.”  Since 1990, the Foard High School Band has earned 12 superior ratings and 5 excellent ratings at district concert festival.  Congrats to the band!

 

03/25/07 Guard to WGI Regional in Nashville, TN

The Foard HS Winter Guard participated in the WGI Regional in Nashville, TN on Saturday, March 24th and ranked tied for 14th place out of 28 units in the preliminary competition in Scholastic A Class.  This qualified them to perform at Finals, where they placed 15th out of 15.  This is the first time the Foard guard has made into finals at a regional competition since 2004.  Congrats to the guard.

 

03/19/07 Guard to Byrnes HS (SC)

The Foard Winter Guard participated in the CIPA contest at Byrnes HS in Duncan, SC on Saturday, March 13, 2007 and placed 5th out of 9 units in the High School A Class.

 

03/09/07 Concert Band I Festival

The Foard High School Concert Band I (9th graders and Prep Band) participated in the Catawba Concert Festival at St. Stephens High School on Thursday, March 8, 2007 and received a rating of Superior (superior from all judges).  Congratulations.  The Concert Bands (9th grade bands) from Bandys and St. Stephens received ratings of Excellent.

 

03/03/07 Guard to CIPA Contest at North Buncombe

The Foard Winter Guard performed Saturday, March 03, 2007 at the CIPA Contest at North Buncombe High School and placed first in Class “High School A.”  The guard also had the highest score of the day regardless of class (76.5).  The guard next performs on March 17 at the CIPA Contest at Byrnes HS in Duncan, SC.  Congratulations Guard!

 

02/05/07 NCJR-West All-Region Jazz Clinic

The NCJR-West All-Region Jazz Clinic will be held at Lenoir-Rhyne College on February 16/17, 2007.  Congrats to senior Adam Velez for being selected 1st chair tenor sax in the JB I.
